High Kicks Into the Light Forever and Ever and Ever
2016
High Kicks into the Light Forever and Ever and Ever is a video installation that investigates the relationship between glamour, affect and the longing for transcendental experience. Composed of a tryptic of immersive projections that explore performative ritual and material play, the work documents a procession of participants meditating under the hot glow of a spotlight. Drenched in the same heavy make-up and lacquered in artificial sweat and tears, a series of performers form a fevered chorus-line of close-ups that project onto facing gallery walls. Sweating, breathing and blotting their glistening faces in unison, the performers leave traces of melted make-up and glitter on a series of linen cloths that are in turn projected onto the central wall of the installation. Exploring notions of illusion, replication and the uncanny, High Kicks Into the Light Forever and Ever and Ever celebrates the magic of materiality while critically investigating the relationship between the spectacular and the sublime.
