The Actor Cries

The Actor Cries integrates performance, sound and video into an installation that investigates the somatic manifestation of sadness and the authenticity of emotional experience. Central to the work is a looped video that documents the theatrical process of an actor attempting to emotively respond to a series of imagined musical soundtracks. Shifting in and out of varied characters associated with the diverse registers of realism, clownish hyperbole and melodramatic fantasy, the actor transforms herself through an uninterrupted wave of improvisation grounded in the act of crying.
